Xiaogang Wu (Ph.D., UCLA, 2001) is Professor of Social Science and Public Policy, the Founding Director of the Center for Applied Social and Economic Research (CASER) at HKUST. His research interests include social stratification and mobility, labor markets and economic sociology, and quantitative methodology. His previous work has appeared in American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, Social Forces, Demography, Social Science Research, and other leading journals in area studies.
 
Since he joined HKUST in 2003,  Professor Wu has received numerous highly competitive research grants and fellowships from the most prestigious funding agencies in the world (through direct application or collaboration), including the US National Institute of Health, European Research Council, Hong Kong RGC Collaborative Research Fund (CRF), and Taiwan. He is the Principle Investigator of “Hong Kong Panel Study of Social Dynamics” (HKPSSD), initially funded by the Strategic Public Policy Research Grant (2009-2014), and subsequently by the RGC Collaborative Research Fund (2017-2020). In addition, He has received 8 General Research Funds from the Hong Kong Research Grant Council, 3 Public Policy Research Funds from the Central Policy Unit of Hong Kong SAR, as well as collaborative research funds from mainland China. He has trained 10 PhD students and dozens of M Phi (research) students and post-docs.
 
Professor Wu is the President of International Chinese Sociological Association (ICSA) (2018-2019) (formerly known as the North American Chinese Sociologists Association, founded in 1981), the founding editor of the Chinese Sociological Review (CSR), a quarterly journal published by Taylor & Francis [Print ISSN 2162-0555, Online ISSN 2162-0563] (Impact Factor 1.476, 42/143 in sociology). He also serves on Editorial Board of Social Forces, Sociology of Education, Social Science Research, Research in Social Stratification and Mobility, Work, Employment, and Society, and among others. In 2012, he was awarded the Prestigious Fellowship in Humanities and Social Sciences by the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong. He currently also serves as a member of Humanities and Social Sciences Panel, the European Research Council (2017-2019). He is the Chair of Academic Advisory Committee, Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) at Renmin University of China (2013-),an academic advisor of the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) at Peking University and China Labor Dynamics Survey (CLDS) at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou.
